Istanbul Airport layover: can you leave, and what fits in your time?

Istanbul Airport is one of the few hubs where your airline will show you the city for free. Here is when leaving makes sense, what you need at passport control, and how to get to the old city and back in time.

Last checked: October 2026.

Quick answer

  • You can leave the airport if you clear passport control. Whether you need a visa depends on your passport.
  • Plan on 8 hours or more. Passport control, about an hour each way to the old city, and 3 hours back at the airport before departure.
  • Free city tour: Turkish Airlines passengers with 6 to 24 hours between two international flights can join Touristanbul.
  • Under 6 hours: stay in the terminal.

Use the layover planner to see your exact time in the city.

What fits in your layover

  • 0 to 6 hStay in

    Stay airside

Not enough time to see the city and get back safely. Eat, rest and keep your connection simple.

  • 6 to 8 hTight

Only with the free tour or a fast queue

About an hour in the city on your own. Touristanbul handles the timing for you if a tour slot fits.

  • 8 to 12 hWorkable

    Sultanahmet on your own

1 to 5 hours in the city: the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, and the Grand Bazaar if time allows.

  • 12 to 24 hHalf day

Old city, Bosphorus, or a hotel

Enough for the old city, a ferry and a meal in Karaköy. Prefer to sleep? Turkish Airlines also has a hotel service for long connections, but not on the same layover as Touristanbul.

Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet

Sultanahmet is the old city, where the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern stand a few minutes apart. It is roughly 50 km from the airport.

Fares from April 2026 and they change often. Havaist takes contactless bank cards. Metro and tram need an Istanbulkart or a contactless card. With big bags, skip the metro: the transfers mean long walks.

The free Touristanbul tour, in short

  • Layover of 6 to 24 hours at IST, between two international flights on one booking.
  • Ticket issued by Turkish Airlines: the number starts with 235.
  • Transport, an English-speaking guide, meals and museum entry are included.
Check your times: the Touristanbul checker shows which tours fit your arrival and departure, and when to be at the desk.

Do you need a visa to leave Istanbul Airport?

If you stay airside and only change planes, most travellers do not need anything. The moment you leave the airport, for a tour or on your own, you enter Türkiye and need whatever your passport requires: nothing, an e-Visa, or a visa from an embassy.

  • Check your passport on Türkiye's official e-Visa website before you fly. Many nationalities can apply online in minutes.
  • Some passports can only get an e-Visa with extra conditions, for example holding a valid US, UK, Ireland or Schengen visa or residence permit.
  • Use only the official government site. Look-alike sites charge extra fees for the same e-Visa.
Even without leaving: since 15 April 2024, passport holders of Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Guinea, India, Mauritania, Nepal, Somalia and Yemen who connect in Istanbul to Colombia, Mexico, Panama or Venezuela need a free Electronic Airport Transit Visa (e-ATV) from the official e-Visa site, evisa.gov.tr. Carry a printed copy: the airline checks it before you board.

Questions travellers ask

Can I leave Istanbul Airport during a layover?

Yes, if your passport lets you enter Türkiye. You pass passport control on the way out and again on the way back in. If you need a visa and do not have one, you stay airside.

How long a layover do I need to see Istanbul?

Plan on at least 8 hours. Passport control takes 30 to 60 minutes, the old city is about an hour away each way, and you should be back at the airport about 3 hours before an international departure.

Do I need a visa for an Istanbul layover?

Not if you stay in the transit area (with a few exceptions, see the e-ATV note). To leave the airport, it depends on your passport. Check the official e-Visa site, evisa.gov.tr, before you fly.

Where can I leave my luggage at Istanbul Airport?

There is a paid left-luggage office in the Arrivals Hall, next to the Touristanbul desk. If your bags are checked through to your final destination, you only carry your hand luggage.

Is a night layover in Istanbul worth leaving the airport for?

Usually not. The metro and tram stop between midnight and 06:00 and most sights are closed. An airport hotel is the better choice for a night layover.
